I was watching the Dayton news tonite and saw a GM truck plant/UAW guy announcing proudly that they had a Food Bank for their employees that have been laid off for approximately 2 months now. I couldn't believe they could announce this on TV that "hunger" was such a large issue with these workers, as between their unemployment benefits and GM sub-pay, they've been making approx 90 to 95% of their usual wages when they ARE working. That amount, by the way, is much more than a ton of employed workers in the Dayton area that are currently working and feeding their families. They should be real "heroes" and donate all those sacks of food to those in the Dayton area that ARE starving, of which there are MANY!!!

Today while some people were saying goodbye to Matt Maupin ,I was in the Lexington , Kentucky Veterans Hospital. I was there to see my uncle ,maybe for the last time. I was Shocked at the pittiful conditions Our Nation's Wounded Veterans have to endure. The rooms were dirty ,hot and crowded. There were no cheerful paintings to look at and only one television per room. No extra seating for visitor's food deplorable and the SMELL . The nurses were nice and I guess they did what was expected of them, no more. Here we let our President send our loved Ones into War but when they come back wounded and broken we don't object to sending them into these Hell Holes. I think our nation needs to start taking GOOD care of the proud men and women who have served their country. Don't take my word ,take a few moments of your own time and visit a local V A Hospital, Look around and see for yourselves. America I AM ASHAMED !

Just because Hillary was the first lady, does not make her seasoned and more qualified - matter of fact I am not sure foreign leaders will take to her because she is a woman.... and besides we have had a 7th grader representing this country for 8 years now, and wow did he do a good job, didn't he? Obama would get into office and just screw everything Good that Bush did for our country, right? Get off of it and get over it, because all this back and forth needs to come to an end. Why are people so scared to say they won't vote for Obama because of the color of his skin? Why are people so scared to say that man brings about unity that no one has seen since the likes of Martin Luther King Jr.? Without unity of all people, we might as well be living under a monarchy, and for many people that is how it has felt for the entire Bush Jr. years. Only a small percentage of people in this country are so wealthy that they can go about their lives and not worry about silly policies and budget crisis and retirement funds or quality education for their children. The rest of us, the majority want some kind of control back. We live in America! So, why don't people just speak the true ignorance and bigotry that is in their closed minds, because Barack Obama is anything but unqualified to be President. I would bet my life that if he was just a few shades lighter, he would be qualified in the eyes of many who just can't get past this man's heritage. QUIT BEING SCARED, AMERICA!! It is not that serious. We all bleed the same color.
Also, when someone is "new" to the scene it is refreshing to watch because this person has done his homework. So, maybe that is why people are scared - this man is putting the mistakes of this country on front street. History is the key to solving problems, but for some reason History kind of keeps repeating itself and it just keeps getting worse.

Middletown red tape

In The Journal today there was an article on Butler County Water Service. They will extend the summer sewer credit to include May and September. This will be a total of 5 months (May thru September). The program reduces sewer bills for water customers during summer months when a lot of water is used in lawns and swimming pools and never enters the sewer system. Butler County Water Service makes it simple they look at the amount of water used during winter months, and if the customer uses more water in summer months they deduct sewer charge on the excess amount. Well now let us look the way Middletown handles this. First purchase a deduct meter from The City at a cost of $300 to $500. Also you will need a permit cost $60 to $100. Have a plumber install necessary piping to accommodate the deduct meter $1000 to $3000. Don’t forget you will need a final inspection $50 to $100. This is just one example of all the red tape that comes with living or doing business in Middletown. The City could save money if they would turn water services over to Butler County. There would be no more employee or repair cost.

Remember life at 18?

Senior year, you were about to graduate from high school and move on to bigger and better things. You and your other senior friends were the top dogs and the world was waiting for you. Maybe this is you now, or your nephew, granddaughter or neighbor.

Now imagine instead of graduation, parties caps and gowns, and all that new freedom 18 meant you were now middle-aged because 36 or 37 was really the average lifespan for you, your friends and your family.

For the 11.5 million people of Zambia, a country located in Southern Africa, this scenario is reality. According to the United Nations Human Development Report, Zambia is the poorest nation in the world. 86% of Zambians live on less than the equivalency of two U.S. dollars a day. 45% of Zambians lack access to safe water supplies, the prevalence of HIV/AIDS in Zambia is at just over 17% and 46% of the population is malnourished. Furthermore, according to the Commission for Africa 1 in 3 children in Zambia will be an orphan by 2010 if we can’t start making some big changes.

But there is hope, despite the fact that malnutrition, AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis have ravaged the Zambian people there still exists stunningly beautiful wildlife, political stability, and rich thriving cultures in Zambia. Keeping this all in mind means that there is much work to be done, and this is why I am writing to you today.

For the past two summers, a group of students from The University of Dayton traveled to the community of Lubwe, Zambia with the intention of creating sustainable relationships and partnerships in work involving specific focuses. These focuses include HIV/AIDS, education, and Women’s Empowerment. It is the group’s desire to continue direct involvement in these areas by working with community projects in the next five to seven years.

In previous years the student group has communicated and researched with the community and its leaders and through this work the group has decided that the Lubwe Youth Skills Center can enable community growth. Lubwe Youth Skills provides the community with locally produced goods and labor (improving the community’s economy), an educational center for young adults, and an opportunity for women to receive additional education, income, and sustainable jobs. At this time, the group is working to raise money for certain tools and equipment, such as sewing machines, and also second hand tools. Lubwe Youth Skills Training Center was opened on July 10, 2006 with classes in carpentry, tailoring/design, and bricklaying. The school has the capacity for 20 students in each class. However, the school fees are 50,000 Zambian kwachas per term (with three terms per year) and few people in the community can pay this. A donation of $13 USD would pay for an entire term for these students.

The community of Lubwe and the UD group would also like to help empower the women of Lubwe through expansion of the Youth Skills Tailoring Class. This training will provide 20 to 25 students each year with the expertise to open their own small businesses through a micro loan which would be repaid over a certain amount of time and placed back into Youth Skills, allowing additional graduates to benefit from the funds.

Thank you for your time and please keep my group and the people of Zambia in your prayers. If you would like to support us (we can really use any monetary help but we are also collecting sports equipment like soccer balls or kick balls) any donations can be made to:

Did I miss something, or is this considered acceptable stellar marine behavior? I'm confused. I believe that all women should be very afraid to serve along side our stellar marines after the fiasco.
"High-Tech" Slavery
                     (Just *145 Years Later)

Maybe it's just me but does anyone else find it more than just a little ironic (and apalling) what with the record number of jobs being lost, bartered and sold and so many "rightsizing's" of personnel happening in Dayton, OH. How anyone can conscionably gloat over the fact that they are making millions of dollars each year from their company (Teradata, Inc.) while simultaneously perpetuating the policy of offshoring thousands of programming services jobs by opening more of their offices in India?

Is this then going to be the wave of Dayton's future? Suggesting, supporting and celebrating this type of business model to meet any kind of "..strategy for achieving the goal of (Dayton) becoming a center for innovation?" Our very own poster child with service businesses,

Did we not learn ANYTHING about the repercussions of what happens to a/our local economy when we offshored our manufacturing?

And HOW is it that apparently the public of Dayton's bizjournal readers must not have been suitably impressed by yesterdays announcement enough that, this morning it is banner news that Teradata's CEO, Mr. Mike Koehler is scraping by on an annual salary of $6,6000,000.00 ('at's a lot of zeros there Martha)

I'm surmizing that Mr. Koehler (underwritten by NCR) is smug in the fact that - "He's earned his Millions...and that his sheer presence and business acumen in our community is just his way of Giving Back (to The Community)." Is this business model then to become the brilliant beacon of "Daytons Innovation" Strategy for (all service) business successes?

Yeah we all know THAT's going to be working, or at least A LOT of folks in India are (working with programming Oracle Applications that is @ 1/3 the US pay rate). So in the not too distant future I'm guessing that NCR and Teradata will be joining in the chorus with Microsoft and Bill Gates to lobby for the elimination "ANY kind" of H1B visa caps in the name of "..profits at (the expense of ANY US$) cost!" good citizenship and "..the lack of skilled programmers in the US." Yep Oracle is LOVING Dayton today, we're golden.

Doesn't this then become more a case of Opportunism rather than Capitalism?

Seems to me that IF a company is unable to manage their way to profitability with its current workforce, is it then the fault of the workforce not being educated enough, or of the management that has lost accountability of their own plan(s)?

I have not contacted the BBB. I thought about it but decided against it.

What I have done is tell everyone that I know & so have all of the people involved. Will it make a big difference ? Probably not. But I can tell you this, the doctor that my fiance works for has put this on his own "DO NOT PATRONIZE" list as of today. He used to eat there on a very regular basis. Not anymore. He said that anyone that treats women this way doesn't deserve his business. I couldn't agree more. I feel pretty confident that with him spreading the word to his associates, this will have a greater impact than what I do.

If I prevent one person from spending a dime in this establishment, I made a difference.

What we are seeing is sub-standard service, poor food quality, and higher prices to off set the loss in business. They have also lost many of their seasoned staff, and are always training and re-training new employees.

The owners should have refunded your entire bill, but they most likely can't afford it.

Tonight, we were invited to dinner at the Hickory Inn on N. Limestone St. in Springfield. Not only was the service horrible, the food was barely fit to eat, it was overpriced & the owner is extremely rude & disrespectful.

We arrived at 6:00 & was seated by 6:15 which is pretty good. That's where the good stops. It took forever for someone to take our order. Once we got our salads, we didn't have silverware & had to wait quite a long time to get it. Our drinks stayed empty the majority of time we were there. We had to ask for everything & the server would take forever each time we made a request.

Once we got the food, it was wrong & some of it was undercooked. By this time, I was sick of waiting & ate mine anyway. Out of the other 3 in our party, 1 didn't take a bite & the other two picked over theirs. The server only came to the table twice from 6:30 until 8:00 to check on us. But believe this, when she handed us the check, she came to the table 3 times within a 10 minute period asking us if we were ready to settle our bill.

We asked to speak to a manager & was told that the owner was there but he was busy. We politely said we would wait because we would like to talk to him about the service. We waited about 30 minutes. The two males in the group went outside for a cigarette & the two females stayed inside.

When he finally came to the table, he was rude & disrespectful. He caused a scene by yelling at my fiance & drew the attention of the entire restaurant to our table. I was not inside when this took place......unfortunately.

We really didn't know that this had happened until the girls walked out into the parking lot. The owner came out the back kitchen door cursing at them & saying some other unkind things. I immediately came to her defense & he started cursing at me & said he was calling the police. I urged him to do so & waited in the parking lot until they arrived. While we waited, several of the employees kept coming out of the kitchen making smart comments as to try to intimidate us.

He ended up discounting the bill to $30.00

The point is this. We weren't looking for a free meal. Our entire group is in their 40's with the exception of one. Our occupations consists of a manager with over 20 years in the service business, a general manager at a very popular franchise restaurant here in Springfield with over 20 years in the restaurant industry,a firefighter & a medical assistant. We know how to treat customers & we know how we expect to be treated. All we wanted was someone to validate our concerns, not discount our meal.

I was really looking forward to our dinner this evening & it was ruined. The owner of this establishment should stay in the kitchen & hire a manager with some customer service skills because he has none.

I will never step foot in this place again & I will pass it along to everyone that I know to do the same. I would suggest that you think twice before giving up your hard earned money in this restaurant.
