Considering the tax benefits of being deployed and the combat pay, with very few expenses in theater, please explain why and tell the whole story. Was he already behind on his payments before he deployed? And guess what. People lost their houses in the past. Yes, even in the 90's. More people are losing their houses because they chose poorly in getting loans. Sorry, but there is no free lunch. You can't get a no-interest or interest-only loan and expect to buy a house. Considering that fixed rates were historically very low, those people who took ARMs without the ability to pay the higher rate when it jumped up were simply speculators. Call me a chicken, but in 2004, I considered and ARM, knowing I was going to sell in 2007. However, I knew that if the house didn't sell, I'd be screwed. So I didn't. It's simple common sense. And I have trouble feeling sorry for people who don't use it.
